GRANDMA'S SILVER BOX

Grandma's silver box, it was so precious to me,
The secret that lay beneath it's lid,she never let me see.
She said, Friends are the tapestry by which the fabric of life is woven.
Their relationship goes deeper than that of a man and a woman.
Friends will not desert you as lovers often do.
Nor grieve you with inpatients as spouses tend to do.
A friend will lift you up and dust you off and forgive you of your sin.
They'll send you off to battle the victory to win.
Their encouragement can raise you to the heights of eagles wings,
They'll make you smile and cheer you on to conquer the important things.
Oft times I would enter the room, with Grandma unaware.
See pain and anguish on her weathered face and traces of tears here and there.
She sat by the silver box where the family Bible lay,
When I asked what was the matter, this is what she would say.
Friends are a tapestry by which the fabric of life is woven.
Their relationship goes deeper than a man and a woman.
Friends will not desert you as lovers sometimes do,
Nor grieve you with inpatients as spouses tend to do.
A friend will lift you up and dust you off and forgive you of your sin.
They'll send you off to battle the victory to win.
Their encouragement can raise you to the heights of eagles wings.
They'll make you smile and cheer you on to conquer the important things.
There lies the silver box my grandma willed to me.
With an anxious hand, I lifted the lid, to set the secret free.
Inside was a cracked and faded photograph of my Granddad at wars end.
On the bottom of the tattered paper was a caption that read,
No greater love has a man than he lay down his life for a friend, so Jesus decreed.
But this man laid down his life for not one friend but an an entire country.
He wasn't just my lover or the husband he should be,
But he was my best friend and heaven was his destiny.
I long to be with him again, united at last at this journey's end.
